End of Year Holiday - Essential English for Travellers年底出去玩你非會不可的字彙

In Taiwan, December is an exciting month. Not because Christmas is celebrated here as much as in the west, but more because it's end of year traveling season. Many people who work hard throughout the year like to indulge themselves with a little trip before the New Year arrives. When it comes to planning holidays, most of us now rely on technology. We book our flight tickets on the internet, as well as accommodation and transportation. This leaves out the numerous opportunities for us to use our English skills when we travel. This month, which also marks the very last issue for the year 2015, let's look at some of the essential English expressions for traveling abroad.
在台灣，12月是個令人興奮的月份，不只因為這裡會像西方國家一樣慶祝聖誕節，更因為它也是出遊旺季。很多人辛苦了大半年，喜歡在新的一年到來前，用趟小旅行慰勞自己。在規劃假期時，現代很多人都會依賴科技，上網訂機票、住宿和交通，這使我們在旅行時有很多使用英文的機會。這個月是2015年「Katie輕鬆聊英語」最後一期，讓我們一起看看出國旅行有哪些必備的英文詞彙。
At the airport
在機場時
As soon as you get to the airport, you need to approach the check-in counter, and the assistant will issue you a boarding pass. They might even ask you if you'd prefer a window seat or an aisle seat. You can give them your preferences by saying, "I'd prefer a (window) seat". They will then help you to check-in your luggage, and you might have additional carry-on luggage, which is also known as hand luggage.
一到達機場，就需要前往辦理登機手續的櫃臺，服務人員會給你一張登機證。他們可能會問你喜歡靠窗還是靠走道的座位。你可用「我喜歡（靠窗／靠走道）的座位」來表達喜好。然後他們會幫你辦理行李托運手續，當然你可能還有些額外要帶的行李，就是所謂手提行李。
On the plane
上飛機後
After boarding the plane, flight attendants will go over passenger safety rules with you. They will also make sure your hand luggage is put away in the overhead compartment. There is usually a selection of in-flight entertainment for you to choose from, such as movies, music, TV shows and magazines.
登機後，空服員會講解飛行安全規則，他們會確認你的手提行李是否都放在艙頂的置物箱。機艙內通常有些機上娛樂資訊可供選擇，如電影、音樂、電視節目和雜誌等等。
Hotels
抵達飯店
Checking-in at the hotel is very simple, you just need to tell them "I've made a reservation and I'd like to check-in" at the counter. If you need some help with your luggage, you need to ask for a bellman, also known as a bellhop or a bellboy. If you need some advice on what you can do in the city, or a nice restaurant to dine in, you can go and ask the concierge. Remember to check if your holiday destination is a tipping culture, if it is, remember to tip for services you receive.
Holidaying is fun, so don't forget to seize this opportunity to practice your English as this will surely boost your confidence in using more of it in your daily life.
