出席餐廳開募派對

當表達對某件事的贊同或是讚美時，中國人用詞通常比較含蓄，例如：「這還不錯」、「相當好」，但是美國人的用詞就會比較誇張：

It’s awesome.（太好了；太棒了）

=That’s great.

=That’s amazing.

=That’s fabulous.

如果你是讚美一個人，可以說： Cindy, the way you pulled this event together is great. It’s very well-organized.（辛蒂，這次活動的安排非常好，很有條理。）

barking head 政論節目的學者或是評論家

指的是就是常常出現在許多政論call-in節目中的來賓，以高分貝的音量、煽動性的語言激化觀眾的情緒，製造分裂。bark意思是「狗吠；大聲咆哮」。另外，我們常見一句和bark有關的諺語：Barking dogs seldom bite.（會叫的狗不咬人），意思是「虛張聲勢」。

big cheese 大人物

這個詞與乳酪一點關係也沒有，最早是源自於印度語中的chiz這個字，意思為「東西」，久而久之，便改以英語的cheese替代。其他同義詞還包括big wheel以及big noise。至於反義詞為small potatoes（小人物），例如：I’m only small potatoes in the company.（我在公司只是不起眼的小人物。）
