Visiting Taipei 101
T.J. Lao: So, here we are-the world’s tallest skyscraper, the Taipei 101 Tower Building.
Bob Randall: Wow. It really is huge. Where do we start?
Cindy Lee: There are offices for securities, finance and other types of business. And facilities for shopping and relaxation, everything from high-end boutiques to fast food.
T.J.: And on and on. But before we go inside and walk around, let me tell you a little bit about the architecture. It’s pretty unique.
Bob: Who made this building, anyway?
T.J.: The architect was C.Y. Lee.
Bob: Hmmm. I can’t figure out if it’s modern, or Chinese in style...
Cindy: It’s both! Take a look... there are eight segments, with eight stories each.
Bob: Why eight? Does that mean something?
Cindy: Ba sounds like fa. And fa means to grow, or to get rich.
Bob: Oh.
T.J.: The skyscraper isn’t just tall-it’s as if it is growing, higher and higher, segment by segment. Like a giant bamboo.
Bob: Sort of like the story of Jack and the Beanstalk... Jack started climbing and kept on going up and up.
Cindy: Each of the segments is supposed to look like a Chinese ruyi, meaning good luck but also authority. And if you look up to the 26th floor, you can see ancient Chinese coins.
T.J.: Can you believe that these are the fastest elevators in the world?
Cindy: You remember from last month-we get big winds in Taiwan during typhoons. And sometimes we have earthquakes that can be pretty intense. Up to 7.6 on the Richter scale.
T.J.: That’s why C.Y. Lee had a huge ball-shaped damper installed on the 87th floor. You can see it. It can counter the shock of an earthquake or strong winds.
Bob: Amazing. You know, I’m from New York, and quite frankly, since 9/11, we’ve been sort of nervous about high buildings.
Cindy: We get nervous about earthquakes. But with the special cement and the damper, this building is safe.
Bob: All this walking has made me hungry. And I was hoping to buy a jade ring for my girlfriend at one of those boutiques downstairs.
T.J.: Bob, there are a lot of choices here. But there is a very special restaurant on the fourth floor, which is named WASABI.
Bob: What kind of food?
T.J.: It’s Japanese cuisine, but the chef also uses Western cooking methods. Bob, did you want to shop? Or eat?
Bob &; T.J.: Eat.
