A question that we very often ask others, and are also frequently asked by others around the office is "So what do you normally do after work? " Some commonplace answers are, "Well, I go to the gym, " "Um... I just go home and watch TV, " "I meet my friends for dinner, " and "I just go to bed because it's so late. " Unlike any of these typical responses, I'm proud to say that I love to kick up my heels and salsa after a long and tiring work day.
My dancing life began not because I wanted to do it, but because my mother was sick and tired of seeing me running around in the park with sheep and cows after school every day. So she enrolled me into a ballet course when I was about six. I fell in love with it instantly and continued for about ten years. Then I left New Zealand to embark on my career as an English teacher, which eventually brought my dancing life to a halt. It wasn't until I rediscovered salsa in a lovely studio in Taiwan that I rekindled my passion for dancing.
Before I knew it, I was in love again, with salsa. The music is not only exhilarating but also vibrant and uplifting. It has the magic to transform people the moment they hit the dance floor. On the health benefit side, because it is a type of partner-dance, it encourages people to connect with others, and eventually, helps them to widen their social circle or even business network. The best part about salsa is its universal lead and follow language, which allows people to go anywhere in the world and dance with anyone.
As my teacher Larry Shao said, "Salsa is easy enough for beginners, but dynamic enough for seasoned dancers; it allows personal styles within its structure; it transcends cultural boarders; salsa is a dance for everybody. "
Although I am not very good at it yet, I can confidently say that it is definitely a great way to unwind, exercise, and more. So what are you waiting for?
