吵架前先搞懂argument、dispute、quarrel、fight...的差別

前幾天有攻其不背的學員問到：argument、dispute、quarrel、fight 這幾個名詞好像都是「爭論、爭吵」的意思，差別在哪裡呢？

它們跟 controversy、debate 又有什麼不一樣呢？

今天我們就一起來深入了解這 6 個名詞，讓自己的英文用字能更加精確吧！

argument 的意思和用法

Argument 可以是負面的「爭論、爭吵」，是生活中常見的單字，也可以是「論點、理由」的意思。例如：

I had a big argument with my mom this morning because she kept setting me up on blind dates!
今天早上我和我媽大吵一架，因為她一直幫我安排相親！

I don't think your argument is persuasive enough.
我不覺得你的論點足夠有說服力。

這個字的動詞則是 argue，意思是「爭論、爭吵」或「提出（主張、論點）」。例如：

It’s normal to argue with friends once in a while.
偶爾和朋友吵架是很正常的。

They argued that there should be no more capital punishment, but I don’t agree.
他們主張不該再有死刑了，但我不同意。

dispute 的意思和用法

Dispute 和 argument 很像，都是「爭論、爭吵」，有負面的含意，但更常用在正式的地方，例如勞資意見分歧、國土糾紛、合約糾紛...等等。例如：

They should settle the dispute over the contracts as soon as possible, or it may affect their business.
他們應該要盡快解決合約糾紛，不然這可能會影響到他們的生意。

另外，dispute 本身也可以當動詞用喔。例如：

Taiwan, China, and Japan have disputed over Diaoyutai Islands for years.
台灣、中國和日本好幾年來都因釣魚臺列嶼而有領土紛爭。

quarrel 的意思和用法

Quarrel 這個字帶有負面含意，意思跟 argument 很像，都是指「爭論、爭吵」，但 quarrel 可以是「無理取鬧、情緒性的吵架」，不像 argument 爭吵時有點「邏輯性」、雙方有各自的立場。例如：

I don’t want to get involved in my parents’ quarrel again. They will make up with each other a few days later anyway.
我不想再度捲入我爸媽的爭吵中。反正他們幾天之後就會和好了。

Quarrel 本身也可以當動詞。例如：

What are they quarreling about?
他們在吵什麼？

fight 的意思和用法

Fight 這個字原本是用來指有肢體衝突的「打架、戰鬥」，但在口語中也有「爭論、爭吵」的意思，這時也可以等同於 argument 或 quarrel。例如：

Let’s have a pillow fight tonight. It would be fun.
我們今晚來玩枕頭大戰吧。這會很好玩喔。

Their fights are always about money.
他們的爭吵總是跟錢有關。

Fight 也可以當動詞。例如：

Stop fighting over trivial matters! Grow up and be mature!
不要再為瑣事爭吵了！長大、成熟一點吧！

controversy 的意思和用法

Controversy 是用來強調「評價兩極」的「爭議、爭論」。例如：

Whether to legalize euthanasia has always been a huge controversy.
是否要合法化安樂死一直以來都存在著很大爭議。

那這個字的形容詞是 controversial，意思是「有爭議性的」。例如上一句也可以改成：

Whether to legalize euthanasia has always been controversial.
是否要合法化安樂死一直以來都很有爭議性。
