April: Hello, International Marketing. Cindy: Please, I want to talk to Mr. Bob Randall?

April: This is April Butler, of the International Marketing Group. May I ask who’s calling please?

Cindy: This is Cindy Lee. I want to talk with Mr. Randall, please.

[pause while call is transferred. Then, April and Bob on the internal line]

April: Hi, Bob. I have a Cindy Lee.

Bob: Could you patch her in?

April: [back with Cindy] Please hold while I transfer you to Mr. Randall.

Cindy: Thank you. [April connects Cindy and Bob]

Bob: Hello, this is Bob Randall.

Cindy: Hello, Bob? This is Cindy Lee. How are you?

Bob: Not bad, and yourself? How’s the weather in Taipei these days?

Cindy: The weather is cool.

Bob: So, Cindy, all of us are really looking forward to working with the Taiwan team on this rollout. You’re in marketing too, right?

Cindy: I am now Vice President of Marketing for Diamondback Grille-Taipei. Mr. Lao is my boss.

Bob: Well, I’ve got a ten o’clock, so let’s get started. We’ve got a December launch slated,so we can work backwards from that timeline.

Cindy: We have a lot of work to do. What is the best way for us to work together?

Bob: Phone and email at first, then I’d like to get over to Taipei in about 5 weeks. Does that work for you?

Cindy: Of course, we welcome you to Taipei any time.

Bob: I was wondering if you could shoot me over your action items.

Cindy: Sure. But, may I ask, on our email communication, should I copy anyone?

Bob: At the beginning we copy both line managers and support staff.

Cindy: OK. Thank you.

Bob: I’ll email you in a couple of days. I’ve got to run. Take care.

Say It in Style

1.This is Cindy Lee.

在一般的工作場合,打電話時的招呼語只需要簡單的說聲Hello就可以,然後直接表明自己的身分:This is ……(我是……)。千萬不要錯誤的直接將中文英譯,說成 I am……。如果你要找某個人,可以問說:Is this Bob?(請問是鮑伯嗎?)或:Is Bob there?(請問鮑伯在嗎?)

2.He is not available at the moment.

如果對方要找的人正好不在或無法接聽電話,正確的說法是:I’m sorry, he is not available at the moment.(他現在不在公司;他無法接聽電話),或是:He has stepped away from desk.(他暫時離開位子)。不要回答說 He is not in the company,這樣對方會誤以為他已經離職了。另外,我們中文常說某個人「不方便接電話」,但是不能直接翻譯成 It’s inconvenient for him to talk now.,這樣似乎是說這個人不想或是不願意接聽電話。其實只要說He is not available at the moment.就可以了。
