For many young careerists in Taiwan, they often have to give business presentations in their workplace. Though they may be confident in doing this in their mother tongue, nervousness and a lack of confidence frequently trouble people when it comes to giving presentations in English. This month, let's learn some English phrases that would help you brush up your presentation skills.
There are three main stages to a presentation: signposting (when you tell your audience what you are going to talk about), signalling (when you move from one point to another), and summarising (when you repeat important ideas and conclude what you have talked about).

At the first signposting stage, you want to engage the audience by giving them a brief overview of your presentation. You could also tell the audience to refrain from interrupting your talk by asking questions at the end. These are some of the useful signposting expressions that are commonly used:
● I'm here to talk to you briefly about...
● This presentation will take about...minutes.
● We will cover...today.
● There will be an opportunity to ask questions at the end.
Signalling is also very important in a presentation, so that your talk is well-structured, and easy for the audience to follow:
● The first point I'd like to make is...
● This brings me to my next point...
● Moving on now, I'd like to talk about...
● I'd like to move on now and tell you about...
Now, let's move on to...
● So we've talked about...
Before finishing your presentation, don't forget to summarise what you've already said. This will help leave a good impression on the audience, and help them to remember the key points of your presentation:
● So, to sum it all up...
● Before we close, let's take another look at the main points we've covered today.
● Now we've come to the end of the presentation, let me summarise the main points again.
Don't forget to thank the audience for their time:
● Thank you for listening.
● That brings us to the end of my presentation, thank you for listening.
● Finally, I'd like to finish by thanking you all for coming today.
